Veneration of the Holy Cross
Third Sunday of Great Lent
The Resurrectional Apolytikion, found on page 171 (55 St. Basil Liturgy), in the Sixth Tone is chanted before and after the small entrance. Then follow the hymn of the feast, the hymn of the Church and the Kontakion.
The Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Sixth Tone: The heavenly powers appeared at Your tomb, and those guarding it became as dead. Mary stood at Your grave seeking Your pure body. But You stripped the power of Hades, not touched by its corruption. You met the Virgin and granted life. O Lovd who rose from the dead, glory to you.
The Apolytikion of the Elevation of the Holy Cross: Save, O Lord, Save your people, and bless your inheritance, Give victory to those who battle evil and protect us all by your holy cross.
The Apolytikion of the Church: Blessed are you Christ our God, who revealed the fishermen to be most wise, by sending down to them the Holy Spirit, and so through them catching the whole world in a net, lover of mankind, glory to you!
Evlogitos i, Christe o Theos imon, o pansofus tus aliis anathixas, katapempsas aftis to Pnevma to Agion, ke di' afton tin ikumenin saginefsas, filanthrope, doxa, Si.
The Kontakion: To you, the invincible commander in chief we attribute victory, and sing praises of thanksgiving, O Theotokos. Keep us all unassailable and deliver us from all the dangers that beset us that we may sing: Hail, O bride unwedded.
Instead of the Trisagion, this week we sing: Ton stavrón su proskinúmen, Théspota, ke tín ayían su anástasin thoxázomen. Before your cross we bow down, O Master, and we glorify your holy resurrection.
Megalynarion: All of creation rejoices in you, O full of grace: the assembly of angels and the human race. You are a sanctified temple and a spiritual paradise, the glory from whom God was incarnate and became a child - our God, existing before all ages. He made your womb a throne, and your body more spacious than the heavens. All of creation rejoices in you, O full of grace. Glory to you.
Communion Hymn Kinonikon: Esimióthi ef' imás tó fós tú prosópu Su, Kýrie. Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord. Alleluia.
The Epistle (Hebrews 4:14-5:6) and Gospel (Mark 8:34-9:1) readings are found on page 140.
