It is said that every Monday morning, before the gates of Paradise, two angels stand ready to descend to the earth. One carries a golden censer, the other a crystal chalice.
An angel who saw them asked the Archangel Michael, “Why are they going to earth today? People are usually weary and hurried on Mondays. They do not pray as they do on Sundays.”
The Archangel Michael smiled and replied: “On Sundays, people call upon us with hymns, sacred songs, and psalms. But on Mondays, we go without being called, because that is when they need us most.”
The angel carrying the golden censer flies over the streets, buses, and office buildings. He gathers every quiet act of patience, every ‘Good morning’ spoken with a smile despite exhaustion, and every hidden hope of the person who begins another day of work to provide for his or her family.
The angel carrying the crystal chalice stands beside those who feel the weight upon their souls. He gathers the sweat of honest labor and the silent prayers whispered amid the noise and busyness of the city.
“And what do they do with all of these things?” the angel asked.
“They offer them back to the Creator,” said the Archangel Michael. “And He, beholding the labor of Monday, blesses the entire week. For holiness is found not only in kneeling before an icon, but also in the kind word you offer to a weary colleague, in the patience you show when burdened, and in the honest work done with love and humility.”
For God is present not only in the quiet of the church, but also in the ordinary moments of our daily lives, where faith is made visible through love.
